Portage Park, Chicago History

Portage Park got its name from the early history of Irving Park Road.  Back in the early 19th century, the area was known as a portage for Native Americans to carry their canoes from the Des Plaines River to the Chicago River.  In 1816, a treaty was signed that gave control to the US government over the entire section between the Chicago River and the Mississippi River.  E.B. Sutherland staked his claim on this territory by erecting a tavern on North West Plank Road (Milwaukee Avenue).  The area also was used as the town hall for what was called Jefferson Township in the mid-1800s.  It was a municipality that was independent of Chicago until 1889.

Over the years many developers made investments on the area and transformed the once marshy landscape into an area that is ideal for settlement. This encouraged an increase in residents in the area.  1913, saw the establishment of this 36-acre park that is also the name of the neighborhood where it belongs. The original plan for the park was made by the American Park Builders Company which was also responsible for the initial construction between 1913 to 1917.  The design of the park included a naturalistic swimming lagoon, that the public began to enjoy in July 1916.  By the 1920s came along, a fieldhouse and gymnasium were added and this was designed by Clarence Hatzfield, the firm that would later design many of the Prairie and Craftsman-style Bungalows in the nearby Villa District.  Portage Park became popular as it offered lots of athletic activities along with cultural and club activities for residents of Chicago’s Northwest side.

More developments were made in order to improve sewage and roads, which at the time were prone to flooding, however, this was corrected when the 1950s came along.  In 1960, the Kennedy Expressway was able to reach residents of Portage Park, allowing for a quick and convenient commute downtown.
