Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (NMPRAC) is located at 3015 W. Division Street and is less than 15 minutes away from McKinley Family Chiropractic within the city of Chicago, IL. The NMPRAC is committed to the promotion, integration, and advancement of Puerto Rican arts and culture, offering exhibitions and programming dedicated to improving the visibility and importance of the rich Puerto Rican arts tradition. The NMPRAC can be found in Humboldt Park, at the heart of Chicago’s rich Puerto Rican community. It is known as the only self-standing museum in the country devoted to showcasing Puerto Rican arts and cultural exhibitions year-round.

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (NMPRAC) History

Established in 2000 by members of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community and local supporters of arts and culture, the museum offers a unique institution that champions the best of Puerto Rico’s identity and heritage. The early years of the museum were focused on renovating the historic Humboldt Park Stables and Receptory, an iconic structure that has been both historically and culturally significant to Chicago since the 1800s. The museum made history when, after 20 years of not inducting any new park museums, it was named as the latest of Chicago’s museums in the park in February of 2012. The name of the museum was changed in 2014 to reflect the status as being the only museum in the nation that is dedicated exclusively to Puerto Rican arts and culture. This recognition made it possible for national accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums. Since its establishment, the museum has featured a variety of quality, community arts and cultural programming, including visual art exhibitions, hands-on community arts workshops, films in the park, and bi-annual arts and cultural festivals.

When visiting the museum you will enter through the spectacular brick archway of the original carriage receptory into a stunning brick courtyard that is decorated with mosaic artwork depicting the Puerto Rican island and its many traditional elements. The extraordinary Queen Anne architectural characteristics of the former stables surround the courtyard, and each room of the stables has been transformed and become part of a completely functional museum.
