Swedish American Museum, Chicago

The Swedish American Museum History

The Swedish American Museum located at 5211 N. Clark Street is just a short two mile drive from McKinley Family Chiropractic within Chicago, IL. Kurt Mathiasson, a Swedish immigrant and one of the leaders of the Andersonville community, had a dream to preserve Swedish-American heritage in Chicago. The original museum was a modest, storefront log cabin where family histories were collected. During the U.S. Bicentennial year, none other than His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, officially opened the museum in its original location.

The Swedish American Museum has been an active part of Chicago for over 40 years and is located at the heart of Andersonville, a traditionally Swedish community on the north side of Chicago. Known as the “Little Sweden” of Chicago, Andersonville is one of the most concentrated areas of Swedish heritage in the United States, with Swedish roots that date all the way back to the 19th century. Tourists visit the museum frequently to try Swedish food, purchase gifts, and take part in traditional Swedish holidays, such as Julmiddag and Midsommar.

The Swedish American Museum is housed in a 24,000 square-foot building that features two gallery spaces with special art exhibits, “The Dream of America” exhibit, the Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration, a genealogy center, and the museum store. All areas of the museum are wheelchair accessible.

The museum has all types of artifacts, including archival material, photographs, domestic items, textiles, decorative items, and fine art pieces. The artifacts accepted into the permanent collection are used for display and research only. However, there is also a collection of artifacts for hands-on educational use in the Brunk Children’s Museum, a library collection for on-site research, and a properties and furnishings collection for building decoration and display props. The museum thrives on the generosity of donors and volunteers. Virtually all of the artifacts at the museum have been donated by individuals, businesses, and organizations.
