Albany Park, Chicago
Albany Park is located on the northwest side of Chicago, near Irving Park, and is imbued with a rich tradition of ethnic diversity. Just a short drive from McKinley Family Chiropractic, Albany Park offers a plethora of grocery stores, shopping, dining, and more all nestled within a multicultural neighborhood. The community features residents from Middle Eastern, Korean, and Yugoslavian backgrounds. All of which bring their cultural influences to one of the city’s bustling neighborhoods. Albany Park is the record holder for the highest ratio of foreign-born residents in Chicago and this is reflected in the local culture and youth theater programs. Many of the neighborhood’s teens and young adults come together to showcase a multicultural ensemble group that touches on many of today’s current issues and offers stories of modern-day immigrants and working-class Chicago residents. The diversity of Albany Park does not rest on its residents but also is reflected in the real estate of the community. You will find many housing options ranging from brick multi-unit courtyard buildings to elegant two and three flats on the outskirts of the community while sturdy brick bungalows dot the western streets and conjure up a rare old-world charm.
Albany Park History
The first settler to Albany Park was a land speculator named Richard Rusk who in 1868 purchased ten acres of land in the undeveloped region northwest of Chicago and changed it into a brickyard on the river banks. By the time the 1870s and 1880s came along, the population of Chicago grew and many residents began settling further outside the heart of the city, gentling easing into the area near Rusk’s brickyard. In 1889, Chicago annexed the land that would later become the Albany Park community.
Just five years later, four influential and wealthy real estate investors bought 600 acres of former farmland for development into residential neighborhoods. One such investor was streetcar mogul, DeLancy Louderback, who was also a native of Albany, New York. He supported the idea of naming the development after his hometown and worked with his partners to bring much-needed transportation within the vicinity, a very vital move to ensure residential and commercial expansion. Lawrence Avenue, located in the center of the community saw its first electric streetcars in 1896, while another streetcar that traversed north along Kedzie Avenue to meet Lawrence Avenue was completed in 1913. However, it was the extension of the Ravenswood elevated track that ultimately made the most significant impact on the development of the fledgling community known as Albany Park. Between 1910 and 1930, the neighborhood saw robust exponential population growth from seven thousand inhabitants to more than twenty-six thousand people. Just a decade later, the population doubled to more than 55,000 people.
