History of Kilbourn Park, Chicago

Established by the Irving Park District, Kilbourn Park got its name from the adjoining Kilbourn Street, named in honor of a small community near the Wisconsin Dells.  Formed in 1910, the Irving Park District was made to create and manage parks for its tree-lined, middle-class communities.  In just fifteen years, the district was able to get the area for Kilbourn Park and developments began immediately after.  By the end of the 1920s, the recreational features of the park included athletic fields, horseshoe, and tennis courts, a couple of playgrounds, a kiddie pool, a sandbox, and an 18-hole putting green.  The community also features a fieldhouse, maintenance building, and greenhouse. This unique feature was used to showcase tropical plants and to help propagate outdoor plants for use throughout the entire Irving Park District.

Kilbourn Park attracted mostly middle-class Protestants and the residents of the community were comprised of wealthy families with large homes.  However, the Great Depression changed all of that as many of these homes were converted into multi-family units.  Also in the subsequent decades, the racial composition of the community also changed from a mostly white native-born population to one of great ethnic diversity that comprised mainly of Asians and Mexicans that now comprise more than a quarter of the population of the community.
