Why Do I Need a Morning Routine?

Raise your hand if you snooze until the last minute every morning. Then you rush out of bed to get ready, forget to put deodorant on, blame traffic for how late you are, and feel stressed for the next two hours until your nervous system calms down. We’ve all been there, and it’s tough to break free of that cycle, but finding a morning routine and sticking to it will free you of that morning stress and most likely help with your overall productivity.

If you begin to reserve time for yourself in the morning, you will notice some new things when you wake up. You probably won’t be as tired throughout the day. Slowly rising and giving yourself time to wake up instead of being startled awake by your alarm and rushing to get your tasks done allows your internal organs, especially your nervous system, to boot up naturally. This allows for sustained energy throughout the day because you won’t crash following your frantic morning. You’ll also notice that you are just generally in a better mood. You will have time to do what you need in the morning plus a little bit of what you want, like reading a book. This allows you to take your time and relax; there is no rush when you give yourself more time in the morning. Finally, you might notice that you’re more productive in the morning. There is a cut down on distractions and temptations when you first wake up, allowing the brain to process through all of your actual tasks.

A morning routine is vital to starting the day off right. Having actual, unrushed time to yourself is the best way to kick off your day. Especially for those of you who have kids and might not get as much time to yourself anymore, reserving time in the morning when everyone is asleep is great for your mental well-being. Ask Dr. McKinley. He’s up at 4:30 a.m. most days getting all of his to-do’s done so he can take care of you and his family for the rest of the day. A morning routine doesn’t have to be planned out and scheduled; knowing what you want to accomplish and setting aside more time to get that done is all you need.

If you have any questions about setting up a morning routine, please feel free to bring it up the next time you’re in the office!
