Avondale, Chicago History

Avondale officially became part of Chicago when it was annexed in 1889.  Since then the city has developed it by installing hard-surface roads that helped the fledgling community become an up-and-coming industrial and business district.  A lot of immigrants from Europe decided to work in Avondale in brand new factories. Moreover, the extension of the railroad along with the electrification of the community also helped people to commute to their respective jobs in the area and the city.

The Avondale community was always known to be a tight-knit group, from the days when it was all farmland up to its development as an urban residential hub today.  During the early part of the 19th century, the area was all prairie land, set along an Indian trail that laid to the west of the Soo Line Railroad near the Chicago River.  In 1848, the Indian trail was straightened out and planked to make it the direct diagonal of Milwaukee Avenue where Avondale first began to develop. Unfortunately, the train tracks had difficulty keeping up with the heavy and frequent loads that passed through them. These were shoddily done and easily became warped from overuse and sun exposure. This resulted in very uncomfortable train rides that led to many commuters complaining. When the Chicago/Milwaukee/St. Paul tracks were extended in 1870 to Milwaukee along with the addition of more stops, more farmers began settling in, including twenty African-American families thus making Avondale a diverse ethnic community. The 1930s also saw many foreigners come to Avondale to settle including Swedes, Poles, Austrians, and Germans.

The end of World War 2, saw the opening of the popular Riverview Amusement Park with its famous parachute-drop rides and popular rollercoaster known as “The Bobs” drawing huge crowds of people to the community every weekend. This establishment is no longer there however, the active and fun vibe of Avondale still remains to this day.
