As many of you know, both Dr. M and myself are huge college basketball fans. My alma mater, the University of Kansas Jayhawks, are playing tonight (Monday) for the national championship. I thought I would share a story that I came across this weekend that relates to basketball and the dangers of medication use.
In 2005, KU had one of the best teams in the country, ranked in the top 10 off and on all year (a 3 seed). At the end of conference season, in a game against Missouri, one of our best players, Keith Langford (he has a couple stints in the NBA and is currently the highest paid American playing in Europe) sprained his ankle badly in the first half. In order for him to continue playing the trainers injected pain relievers and anti-inflammatories into his ankle.
