So, for those of you who know me well, my wife and I had our 3rd baby last week, and everything is GREAT! Totally healthy and 100% natural birth with no interventions, IV’s or drugs. That being said, something new happened at the hospital which I feel obligated to share with my followers.

After the Natural Birth of our beautiful little girl, Camila, we declined the erythromycin, which is the antibiotic rubbed in the eyes post birth. This is a standard hospital procedure that has been done needlessly for years. The whole reason the antibiotic is rubbed in the eyes, is in the rare change the mother or father has one of the STD’s, gonorrhea or chlamydia, then their is a rare chance of blindness. That being said, most mothers are tested by their O.B. by a blood test, weeks before birth to see if they have these STD’s. My wife tested negative for these, so there was no logical need for the antibiotic.

Like all doctors, I was required to sign an oath, of first, do no harm. Anytime you prescribe or apply a RX med with known side effects, but the patient doesn’t have diagnostics to indicate the use, then it’s plain wrong and dangerous. No parent wants their kids to have the side effects of anything, unless it seems worth it. Also, why test my wife for STD’s and withdraw her blood, if we are going to ignore the results, and just give the drug to the baby anyway?

For years, knowledgeable parents, like us, who know this, could refuse the application of the antibiotic, and just let the baby sit with mommy and breast feed skin to skin, rather than being torn away to wipe antibiotics needlessly in her eye! The problem is that this year, Northwestern Memorial Hospital here in Chicago is playing BIG BROTHER, They are now scaring parents into getting it or else, regardless of your STD test results…WHAT? I seriously can’t make this up! I demanded to see the policy in writing, and yes…it exists!!! as of November 2013,..if you don’t get the antibiotic, regardless of your STD test result, then they will Call DCFS on you!! So now, trying to be a knowledge parent, and care for the wellness of your child, is bad and will be reprimanded!!

This does not mean you will lose your child, but you will have a record with DCFS, and if they want, could visit your home to see if you are a fit parent. I know, it sounds RIDIC-U-LOUS, but this is what is happening right now in Chicago’s most respected hospital! Even my O.B, whom is AMAZING, didn’t know this, and was outraged at the new policy!

Look…at the end of the day, I’m not too worried about the antibiotic, but I am worried about patient’s rights and obviously not letting policy dictate logic.

So a parent, that eats like crap during pregnancy, maybe even smokes a couple during pregnancy, never exercises, or CONNECTS with their baby….get all the drugs to have the MOST un-natural of births, then goes straight to formula, maybe even has chlamydia and need the antibiotic rubbed in the baby’s eyes…ok that person won’t have DCFS called, but WE WOULD?…WTF? This is a major sign that the health of you and your family is in jeopardy….what will be FORCED on you next? IF you don’t think $$$$$ is involved in these FORCED RX drug policies, you are BLIND….no pun intended :)
