In this article we’re going to be discussing the 5 major problems that start when the nervous system is stuck in fight or flight, or more technically called, sustained sympathetic tone.

5 Problems

  1. Fatigue / Exhaustion
    • Even if you feel your’re eating excellent, you just can’t keep up your stamina. Many times, this is also called adrenal fatigue
  2. Sluggish Metabolism
  3. Blunted immune response
  4. Foggy Thinking
    • Organization issue , overwhelm, forgetful. Just taking natural supplements like ginkgo isn’t going to fix the issue, but may slightly help
  5. Altered behavior
    • At this point, individuals really don’t even know they are sick. The are accepting average, at best, for their life and health. Becoming snappy with family and kids or having a very defensive stance on issues. Body is stuck in flight mode, so there is no time to rest or heal, and it just gets worse.

Other symptoms can include random aches and numbness, headaches and migraines, dizziness, ringing of the ears, anxiety, and panic. Usually, sleep then becomes affected and waking up several times a night or having a hard time falling asleep become common. This is generally the point where people go on Rx mood medications or sleep aids. This does not, however, correct the problem.

The true solution is getting the vagal tone of the nervous system to balance. In our office we measure this with HRV (heart rate variability) and sEMG. Specific adjustments designed for vagal tone work great at getting patients back on track. While diet needs to be addressed, most have already worked on that, so it’s not the major issue. Also, it is very important to work out, but not to intense, otherwise condition will worsen.
